St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been placed on the restricted list and is expected to miss the next two games. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Molina left for “business matters” and is expected to return to the team on Monday. Marmol added that the catcher previously asked permission to leave for the weekend and the request was granted. Marmol said the 10-time All-Star selection wasn’t scheduled to be in Saturday’s starting lineup but would have played Sunday.

Sonny Dykes has opened things up since becoming TCU's coach. There was a sometimes carnival-like atmosphere during spring practice with fans surrounding the field. Dykes was 30-18 the past four seasons at SMU. TCU was 23-24 during that same time. Patterson and the school mutually agreed to part ways last October. TCU has a Friday night opener at Colorado on Sept. 2.

Manchester City aims to match Arsenal in opening the season with three straight wins in the Premier League. Defending champion City heads to Newcastle for a match against a Saudi-funded team which could within a few years be a serious title contender because of the wealth of its owners. Barcelona will try to rebound from a disappointing opening draw when it visits Real Sociedad in the Spanish league. There will be scrutiny on the interaction between Kylian Mbappe and Neymar when defending champion Paris Saint-Germain visits Lille in the French league. Bayern Munich goes for revenge against Bochum which was responsible for one of its five defeats last season. Defending champion AC Milan plays at Atalanta in Serie A.

The Miami Dolphins have placed backup cornerback Trill Williams on season-ending injured reserve. Williams tore the ACL in his left knee during the team's preseason opener against Tampa Bay. Also Monday, Miami signed veteran cornerback Mackensie Alexander and defensive tackle Niles Scott. Alexander is entering his seventh season, spending five with the Minnesota Vikings and one with the Cincinnati Bengals. Scott has mostly spent time on practice squads but played in six games with Cincinnati during the 2018 season.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele play practice rounds just about every tournament. The stakes will be a little higher in the BMW Championship their next time together. Cantlay holed a wedge from the fairway for eagle on his way to a 65 at Wilmington Country Club. He has a one-shot lead over Schauffele. They'll be in the final group Sunday. Cantlay is trying to become the first back-to-back winner of the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup era. Scott Stallings also was one back. Adam Scott and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler were two shots behind.

The Atlanta Braves, on a three-game home winning streak, host the Houston Astros.

When Geoff Collins arrived at Georgia Tech, he confidently pitched the idea of transforming the Yellow Jackets into a powerhouse. Instead, they’ve gone in reverse. Collins may be coaching for his job in 2022 after posting a 9-25 mark over his first three seasons — winning three games each year. Only one coach in the school’s modern era, Bill Curry, had fewer wins at the three-year mark in his tenure. That’s hardly what Georgia Tech was expecting when Collins was hired to replace longtime coach Paul Johnson. Immediate success may be hard to find with a season opener against Clemson.

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 90th-minute header snatched Fulham a 3-2 win over local rival Brentford in the Premier League at a rocking Craven Cottage. The Serbia striker converted Kevin Mbabu’s cross to the far post just as Fulham looked to have squandered victory after surrendering a 2-0 lead established inside the opening 20 minutes. Marco Silva’s team sealed its first win of the campaign thanks to Mitrovic’s second goal of the season but also two disallowed goals from Ivan Toney. Toney did finally score a goal that counted by tapping home to level the score at 2-2 in the 71st minute.

Two more years of history, two more years of glamour, two more years of buzz.
